How to keep yourself and your kids healthy during flu season ?

All parents dread their children getting sick- having a child not sleeping well, not eating well and missing school. It could be worse and the cold develops into something requiring medical attention. Before talking about what a sleep- deprived, overworked parent can do, we need to some facts to help you keep your kid safe during cold and flu season.

First, cold and flue are caused by viruses, which are type of germs infecting our body cells and making us ill. Several colds are caused by rhinoviruses that infect the nose causing runny noses. There is also stomach flu caused by enteroviruses that infect the gastrointestinal tract causing vomiting, nausea and diarrhea, and there is the actual flu caused by the influenza virus.

Actually, the discomfort we feel is due to the virus effect on our cells as well as the effect of our immune systems fighting the virus.

Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, whereas there are no medicines to kill cold and flu viruses; our immune systems have to do the task for us.

It is our duty to protect ourselves and our children in the first place, and if we or our kids get sick, we have to help the immune systems do their work together with some medication to alleviate the symptoms.

To protect yourself and your children, hand washing with soap and water is the most important thing to do; make sure your kids wash their hands frequently- always after being in a public place and after using the restroom and most importantly before eating. Sneezing or coughing into a tissue instead of the bare hands is essential to stop spreading the viruses, and avoid the kisses or sharing the towels, foods, drinks, etc. with any sick person.
