Your child probably bumped his/ her head before, but not all head bumps are the same; a serious hit to the head can temporarily change the way the brain works, which is called concussion.
The skull works as a protection for the brain and when someone’s head gets a hard hit, the brain may shift inside the skull and knock against its bony surface.
You may not be able to tell if your child gets a concussion because it is tricky, but there are some signs and symptoms that mean you should take your child to the hospital or call the doctor right away, and they are as follows:
– Severe headache
– Loss of consciousness
– Trouble walking
– Trouble concentrating and saying things that do not make sense
– Blurred vision
Concussions can cause serious problems, if they do not get the right treatment.
The right treatment means your child needs to rest his/ her body and brain and to follow the doctor’s instructions; if your kid plays sports, he/ she should stop practicing till the doctor allows it.
Kids, who do not recover fully from a concussion, can get another one easily and more likely they are prone to problems like headaches that may last for weeks or even months, and it will be hard for them to focus in their study. Make your child understand well that it is important to take good care of our brain because it is the boss of our body; without it we cannot think, talk or walk.
Also, make sure your kid tells you if he/ she gets hit in the head. Make sure your kid wears the seatbelt while travelling in the car and the helmet while biking or doing other activities such as skateboarding and football.
