Is it true that simple choices you make every day can cut your cancer risk? Well, there is no “killer app” to keep you healthy and there is nothing magic about cancer prevention. Actually, it is possible for anyone to develop cancer even with trying to live a perfectly healthy life.
However, experts say that at least a third of cancer cases are related to one’s lifestyle. With every unhealthy habit you drop and every healthy choice you make, you are decreasing your cancer risk. Here are some of the healthiest habits to help prevent cancer:
• Stop smoking – lung cancer due to smoking kills a lot of men and women every year, and smoking is linked to different other cancers; it nearly accounts for a third of all cancer deaths. You can even reduce cancer risk significantly by cutting back, if you have trouble quitting entirely.
It is a good first step, but you need to go on till you quit completely for your health’s sake. As a matter of fact, smoking can be permeating your life, even if you are a nonsmoker. There are strong indicators that lung cancer and other cancers may be linked to secondhand smoke. So, think twice before you or your child spends time in smoke- filled places.
• Stay within a healthy weight range – we all probably know that too much weight is not good for the heart, but do you know it is also a major risk factor for cancer? One of the most important ways to prevent cancer is to stay as lean as possible. Obesity is linked to a wide variety of cancers including pancreatic, gallbladder, kidney and breast cancers.
• Physical activity – any physical activity helps to lower the chances of many forms of cancer. 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day can significantly cut the risk of many common cancers.
