10. Mental illness
Left-handed people have long been suspected of having an inexplicable tendency towards mental illnesses. To cut all doubt clear, a research was executed at Yale Unuversity regarding tge matter. Researchers found that 40% of the examined people with various mental illnesses were left handed. This result is quite shocking especially when we know that only 10% of the whole population were left handed!
9. Neanderthal men
Researchers tried to look in the possibility of the existence of left-handed individuals in that age. Researchers examined their tools and handwork and came to the fact that they have favoured their right hands just like modern men. However, there always existed the percentage of the exceptional minority even in that age.
It was thought that language tend to evolve in the left hemisphere of the brain, and thus it is the more active and developed hemisphere. Also it is a widely known fact that the right hemisphere of the brain controls the left side of the body and vice versa. However, it was proved that for lefties the language evolves in the right hemisphere. And since the language evolves in a very early age, it contributes to the development of that hemisphere. And thus it controls which hand you will favour for the rest of your life!
Every castle has a spiral stair for the getaway plan in case of an attack. The spiral stairs are designed to go clockwise which gives the defendant more control of his movement. In scotland many castles where designed to go anti-clockwise because the ruling families had a long line of lefties.
Researches conducted by the University of Utah proved that people tend to fear anything that is ‘left’. It is the innate fear of the threats coming from our left. They said that we tend to see these threat coming from our left side as much more scary than those coming from our right side. This is just interesting!
5. The Bible
The Bible is full of stories about warriors; one of which is Ehued’s. Eheud, the left-handed warrior was sent to free israel from the Moabites. The hero here is an experienced left-handed soldier. There is also the story of the Benjamites which was a bit ironic. The Benjamites were left-handed when the “Benjamin” meant “the son of my right hand”.
4. Retraining kids
Retraining our kids to use their right hand instead of the left can develop some great problems like a stutter, dyslexia and other reading problems. King George VI was a left handed whose tutor tried so hard to retrain on using his right hand. He also had the famous stutter but is not really known if the stuttering was a result of that or it was a prior condition. Scientists tried to explain it as a struggle of dominance between the two hemisphere of the brain.
Lombroso’s theories about left handedness is extreme and, well, different. He thought that the brain had a higher part for thinking and lower part for emotions and desires. Left handed people, according to him, live the life of savages as they are dominated by their urges.
2. Left handed people die younger!
This theory was believed for along time and has recently been proven wrong. After comparing the statistics, researchers found that many of those who died young were left handed only because they were trying to adapt to using their right hand in everyday life. The younger generation has not faced such a thing because they were not ashamed of being left handed.
Survival of the fittest has also found its way in the question of left handedness. Lefties are thought to be better fighters and also better survivors. Natural selection has made its genetic choice in favour of the left handed folks as researches agree. “I wish I was left handed”, never thought you’d hear that, right?!
