10. Suggestibility

So what is hypnosis really about? It is about a suggestion that the hypnosis performer tries to put into your mind. No matter what it is just a suggestion but does this suggestion work on everyone? No, there is something called suggestibility in hypnosis which mean that some people can be more possible candidates to it than others. Some people can be more open to the idea of being suggested to than others.

As we all know, we took our ideas about hypnosis from the media. Movies, acts and shows tend to use it as an entertaining trick to the audience. A types of these shows is what is called stage hypnosis. This type of show usually aims only at entertaining the audience and showing them how they can control others into doing the tricks they wanted. This type of show ends up giving you a very small idea about the true science of hypnosis.

It can help you to release suppressed memories, suggest an idea to help in your treatment and much more. However, it always depends on the suggestibility of each person. Self-hypnosis or self-suggestion can actually be performed by whoever he or she is that has high suggestibility and masters this art. This is about getting yourself to a state of mind that is serene and comfortable and suggest any idea to your mind. You could use it to overcome your fear from a certain thing or situation.

The hypnotic induction is the way by which your mind can go to sleep. In self-hypnosis, you can do this using a recording and in stage hypnosis, it is usually a more fast rythmed way to ensure that the audience does not lose their interest. It is this 30 seconds of rythmic breathing that allows you to go to your most serene state of mind. This hypnotic induction is always instructed by the hypnosis performer before starting any suggestions.

5. Easy to remember, or hard?

Like in most movies and shows, the hypnotised person usually forgets all that happened during the hypnosis but only if!! The hypnotised forgets only if he was explicitly asked to forget by the hypnosis performer or if his mind wanted to suppress it. The mind always prefers to suppress these memories, however, they are in fact easy to retrieve.

Hynosis history goes back to 1800s when it was first used as a method of anaesthesia. However, it even goes farther than this as it is believed to have been use in Ancient Egypt and in Ancient Greek. It appears to have had a big history of uses and applications. It must have been thought to be of vital importance and looked at as a practice that has been proven to give result.
3. Is hypnosis legit or not?
In the 1950s, The American Medical Association officially recognized hypnosis as a medical practice used in treating physical and psychological illnesses. However, then in the 1980s the recognition was withdrawn for the claim of not having enough proof about its uses and results!

It is a widely believed myth that in hypnosis your are controlled to the extent that you might do things you do not want to. Actually, this is not true as you will not do or perform anything that is unacceptable to your morals and beliefs. As hypnosis is only a suggestion, you will only do what you can imagine yourself doing. However, this phrase is as tricky as it sounds!

Although the terminology of the word hypnosis suggests a state of sleep, you are in fact very much awake. You are conscious of everything around you as much as will be in a normal state. However, you are shutting down certain receptors that your mind is free to speak and act!
