Things to See and Do in Paraguay – South America

....................................................................................

Guarani is the name of Paraguay’s population, currency, and language. Guarani and Spanish are the official languages of the country. Both languages have similar letters and about 80% of the population speak both languages fluently. They also often mix both languages in a local dialect called “Jopara”.

Paraguay is one of the least densely populated countries in South America. The country is also relatively remote and its economy is highly dependent upon neighboring countries – Brazil and Argentina. However, it’s a home to a matchless biodiversity including 500 species of birds, and 200 species of reptiles and amphibians, crocodilians, jaguars, and pumas.

During your trip in Paraguay, you might never see any local banknotes. One of the reasons why this currency is invisible is that its rate often drops due to inflation. However, Paraguay is a free trade zone. Brazilians and Argentineans come here to buy products for much lower prices which brings profits to the country. Therefore, foreign currencies like American dollars, Brazilian reals and Argentine pesos are in much better position in this territory and more widespread than Guarani.

Paraguay is the first South American country to revolt against its colonial master. After the Spanish conquered the land in the 16th century, Paraguay became the center of their activities. However, native Paraguayan managed to win their battles with the Spanish military and they finally fled on May 15, 1811. That’s when Paraguay became an independent nation and a free land.

One of the most beautiful things you could see in Paraguay is the celebrations held on Independence Day on May 15 each year. It’s a raucous spiritual celebration where you can see neighborhoods hosting huge barbecues, football matches, tribal dance performances, fireworks, and parades of military veterans. Paraguay is a strong religious country, so don’t be surprised when you see locals tying their patriotic celebrations with spiritual meaning. They may spend the day praying in the church or at monuments like the Mausoleum of Heroes.
