Fans of Angelina Jolie have probably witnessed the splendid Angkor Thom while watching Tomb Raider. However, no work of art can describe the splendid attractions of Angkor as a visit to this Cambodian city will do. Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and other historical attractions located in Siem Reap go back to Khmer Empire between the ninth and fifteenth century.
After the Khmer rule, Angkor and its ruins were abandoned until the French rediscovered the area in the nineteenth century and attempted to restore it and it wasn’t until 2004 that Angkor got removed from the “in danger” section of UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Angkor Wat

The most prominent temple in Angkor is Angkor Wat that the national flag of Cambodia has the main temple in its design. The temple is one of the largest religious buildings in the world with an outer wall stretching for 3.6 km. Angkor Wat has five towers which are carved along with the temple’s interior and exterior with Hindu designs. Climbing to the top of the central towers the main temple of Angkor Wat allows visitors to have a look on the magnificent surrounding area.

The Bayon

The temple of the Bayon is located at the center of Angkor Thom thus symbolizing the link between heaven and earth. The temple was built for the legendary king Jayavarman VII having 54 gothic towers which are adorned with famous 216 gigantic, coldly smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara that look like the legendary ruler. To see the whole design of the Bayon, one needs to walk through dark, tight passages as The Bayon is smaller than Angkor Wat.

Transportation in Siem Reap

A great advantage in Siem Reap is its small area and lack of traffic. Getting around Angkor on foot can be a fun experience as long as the visit isn’t during monsoon rains. When it’s raining, tuktuks are affordable transportation options for short distances and can take up to four passengers. Seekers of luxurious air conditioned transportation can find taxis and vans to take them around near and far locations.
