How to Stop a Nosebleed Quickly

Nosebleeds happen frequently mainly with children. Mishandling nosebleeds is also common and can lead to worse consequences including more bleeding. In order to avoid wrong reactions to seeing nasal blood come out, teach yourself the proper steps to stop a nosebleed quickly by reading the coming up points:

1. Have a Seat

Tilt your head forward as blood is supposed to drain and not be swallowed. In case you are helping someone else, wear non-latex glove to keep them and yourself safe.

2. Pinch the Soft Part of the Nose

Breathe through your mouth while pinching your nose to hinder blood flow. By all means avoid coughing, snuffling or swallowing or else the clotting process will be disturbed. If blood enters your mouth, spit it out in a bowl or a cloth to avoid becoming sick.

3. Release after 10 Minutes

Let go of the nose after 10 minutes and see of the bleeding stopped. In case blood still comes out, repeat pinching for 10 more minutes.

4. Use an Ice Pack

Place an ice pack on the bridge of the nose to slow down blood flow.

5. Clean the Nose

Use a damp cloth to clean around the nose when bleeding ends. After that, don’t blow your nose nor engage in exhausting activity for the rest of the day.

6. Help a Child with Nosebleed Calm Down

Pinch the child’s nose as they may not be able to hold it for too long, and patiently explain the steps.

7. Ask for Immediate Medical Attention If:

• You had a blow to the head followed by watery nose bleed as this may mean a skull fracture.

• You have nosebleeds several times per week as this may indicate hypertension.

• You suffer from recurrent nosebleeds with bleeding gums and unexplainable bruises.

• You have are using a blood-thinner and having a prolonged nosebleed.
