How to manage stress and cope with it?

....................................................................................

Your family and career responsibilities are always demanding, and there can never be more hours in the day. But realizing that you are in control is the key to stress management; it is all about taking charge of your emotions and thoughts.

Identifying the true sources of stress is very important in stress management, and it is not easy as it sounds, for example you may think your work deadline is your main concern while it can be your procrastination that leads to your stress rather than the actual work demands.

Your stress will remain outside your control unless you accept responsibility for the role you play in creating it.

Many people unfortunately cope with stress in ways compounding the problem; their coping strategies can cause more damage in the long run, for example but not limited to smoking, sleeping too much, using pills or drugs, withdrawing from family and friends, overeating or taking out your stress on others.

If your method to cope with stress is one or more of the aforementioned, it is time to find healthier methods. As a matter of fact, everyone has his own response to stress and there is no one solution to managing it; you cannot find a single method working in every situation or for everyone.

The first method to avoid unnecessary stress is to know your limits and to say “no” whether in your professional or personal life so you do not have to take on more than you can handle. Avoid people who cause you stress or at least limit the time you spend with them. You need to cut down your to- do list, i.e. analyze your daily tasks and responsibilities and drop unnecessary tasks to the bottom of the list or get rid of them entirely.
