The health of your eyes is somehow related to the health of your heart. Whatever you know is good for your heart, benefits your eyes as well. Just like any part in the body you need to take care of, you have to protect your eyes from injuries and serious diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and cataracts. You can protect your eyes simply by following the subsequent diets and lifestyle changes:
Wear Sunglasses with UV protection : Exposing your eyes to sunlight’s UV rays not only grows cataract and ARMD faster, it also burns and damages eye tissues including the cornea and conjunctiva.
Lose Weight : Being overweight may affect your eyes in several ways. Blindness can occur when an overweight person develops type 2 diabetes due to diabetic retinopathy. Sometimes fat can block good blood circulation in the eye diminishing the amount of nourishment it receives.
Exercise : Exercise ensures a 50% lower chance of developing glaucoma. Since it lowers pressure on your eyes, it also helps a person already suffering from glaucoma.
Eat Fish : Omega-3 fats found in fish, especially salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna and herring, can lessen the risk of developing ARMD.
Eat Spinach : Leafy greens, particularly spinach, are rich in essential antioxidants like lutein and zeaxathin. These antioxidants are important for the health of you retina and without them your body can’t fight diseases similar to ARMD. Other sources of antioxidants include orange colored fruits such tangerines, askumquats and apricots, eggs, seeds and nuts.
Avoid Smoking : Smoke you inhale damages the vessels in your eyes; it increases the risk of eye diseases and insures early cataracts, possibly at the age of 40.
Relax : Stress not only causes damaging effects to your heart, but also to your eyes. It’s important to engage yourself in unwinding activities throughout the day.
