No one can deny the importance of food in our life, food is not only important in providing our bodies with the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients to ensure a proper function for the organs and systems of the body but it also has a significant impact on our mood and physiological state. How many times you noticed that while you are in a bad mood you crave certain foods and when you eat those foods your mood improves. Just like there are foods that can improve your mood when you are stressed or just feeling down, there are foods that can worsen your blues and make you get even mire stressed and unhappy. So the next time you feel down make sure to avoid the following foods.

Recent studies proved that certain foods contain chemical compounds that can interfere with the mood and state of mind. Among the most dominant foods that worsen mood and increase stress are:-

1- Salt.

When salty foods are eaten in large quantities throughout the day, a misbalance in the minerals levels in the body happen as a result, potassium particularly get reduced significantly which is an essential mineral for the function of the nerve system which can lead to a temporary feeling of depression that fades away once potassium levels are restored.

Consuming foods rich in refined sugar causes a sudden spike in the blood sugar levels which can successfully give you a temporary boost in the mood and energy levels that quickly get followed by a quick drop in the blood sugar levels that leads to a quick change in the mood, leaving you sad and stressed.

3- Caffeine.

Unlike the popular concept that coffee helps in reducing stress and tension, studies proved the opposite, the caffeine found in coffee and soda drinks causes a spike in cortisol levels which is responsible for stress and tension. The more caffeine you consume the higher cortisol levels get produced.

4- Low Fiber Foods.

Foods that are low in fiber affect the mood by two ways, first it doesn’t stimulate the sensation of satiety provide your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly and secondly by affecting the digestive tract and cause constipation and bloating which another thing that can make you feel annoyed and unhappy.

On the other hand, the foods that make the body energetic and boost your mood are those that provide the needed nutrients the body requires on daily basis, such as fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, grains. Dark chocolate was also proven to boost the mood and improve the state of mind.
