Do you know that fear of self- expression is the hidden cause of depression, which is a worldwide epidemic? You may become depressed, when you often sacrifice self- expression in exchange for approval and acceptance or to avoid conflict or rejection.
Every time you give up self- expression so that your emotional needs are met by others, you are actually cutting yourself off from your intrinsic source of power and energy, diminishing your natural state of joy and peace, and the result is depression.
As young children, we are taught that it is necessary to follow a set of rules and regulations that are handed to us from our parents, teachers and society as whole in order to be accepted and appreciated. Fear of contradicting the pre- existing ideals of those around us makes us believe that self- suppression is a better choice than self- expression.
Unfortunately, there is a huge unseen price to pay when you constantly repress your real self. The unavoidable by- product of not being your true self is depression, so stop negating yourself in order to avoid conflict with others. When you look deeper, you will see that chronic depression is caused by continuously closing yourself down in order to avoid conflict.
It is true that sometimes being our true selves can cause others to feel uncomfortable and on occasion there might be conflict, but this means overcoming the opinions of others and eventually people in your life will learn your new song and sing along with you; those who do not will simply go on their way.
Being yourself requires listening to your heart and expressing yourself. As a matter of fact, we disconnect from the immense source of power and energy, when we suppress expression and hide our real selves, so save yourself by finding and expressing your true self.
