Somnath Temple

Somnath temple in Gujarat is supposedly the oldest Hindu temple in India. The temple, magnificently facing the sea, was built to honor Lord Shiva and is the Shiva’s first of twelve Jyotirlingas, shrines of worship. When walking around the Somnath Temple, it’s hard not to notice the skillfulness of the architects and the artisans who took great care of the details. A legend about the temple states that Soma, the Moon God, began its construction to gratitude Shiva’s act of freeing from a curse. Since then, Somanth has been demolished and reconstructed many times.

Sun Temple

The Sun Temple of Konark is considered one of the wonders of India. The temple was built in 1250 AD during the reign of the Ganga dynasty as a devotion to the Sun God patron of Konark, Surya. The beautiful sandstone structure is built in the shape of an enormous chariot with twelve wheel pairs and pulled by seven horses. The shape of the monument symbolizes the parade of Surya to the sky. The elaborate art used on the temple’s design demonstrates Orissa’s remarkable craftsmanship.

Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is the Sikh’s most respected and dignified monument. It got its name from having a 15.5 m tall gold plated shire but its original name used to be Harmandir Sahib. The Golden Temple is situated in Amritsar, meaning Pool of Nectar, which is called after the holy pool of water around the temple. The temple can be reached by a marvelous marble bridge. Having its foundations put by a Muslim, the temple built in 1588 welcomes worshippers from different sects. Unlike other temples where the devotees must climb up stairs to offer greetings, visitors of the Golden Temple step down to pay their homage.
