3 Surprising Foods that Make Your Joints Ache

....................................................................................

About 20% of the adults in USA are diagnosed with arthritis, so you probably know someone who suffers from this disease. When the joints of individuals suffering from arthritis swell and stiffen, simple movements such as holding a pen or walking to the next room become excruciating tasks.

Medications and anti-inflammatory foods such as nuts, fatty fish and olive oil can help relieve joint pain. However, there are other foods, when consumed regularly, can worsen joint pain. Here are three foods that anyone suffering from arthritis, or other conditions that make joints ache, should avoid:

1. Sweet Sodas

There is a number of people who drink sodas in the place of water; ignoring the fact that these sugar-loaded drinks are increasing their risk of heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Sugar in sodas promotes the release of cytokines, inflammatory chemicals. Consequently, research shows that women who drink at least one soda on a daily basis increase their chances of having arthritis by 63% more than those who completely avoid the beverage.

2. Tomatoes

Gout is a type of arthritis that is caused by the accumulation of uric acid in the body affecting the joints. Studies have shown that increased consumption of tomatoes increases the levels of uric acid in the body thus aggravating joint pain in gout patients.

You don’t need to completely eliminate tomatoes from your diet, after all they’re delicious and have anti-inflammatory properties, but you have to regulate your tomato consumption and keep your uric acid levels in check.

3. Oils Filled with Omega-6 Fatty Acids

As mentioned earlier, fatty fish is beneficial to those who suffer from arthritis, but that is because it contains omega-3 fatty acids and not much omega-6 fatty acids. Sunflower, cottonseed, corn and soybean oils are loaded with omega-6 fatty acids which are linked to cardiovascular disease, asthma and inflammation.
